     A good pit stop allows a team to hold its position on the track. If someone misses a step or is out of sync, a lead can instantly evaporate. If the driver slows too much down pit road, he will lose time. Overshooting the pit can be be even more costly. 55 mph to 0 at exactly the right moment requires skill and precise timing. Races are won and lost in the pits. Polesitter and race leader Ernie Irvan's last green flag stop left him sixth behind 1st out Dale Earnhardt.
